They say that history is written by the winners. And for Eurovision that is mostly the case. But that doesn’t mean that we forget about everyone else. Often, some would even suggest that the best songs always come second. We couldn’t possibly confirm or deny such a theory. We choose our favourite runner-up from: Turkey's maNga (2010), Italy's Raphael Gualazzi (2011), Russia's Buranovskiye Babushki (2012), Azerbaijan's Farid Mammadov (2013), The Netherlands' Common Linnets (2014), Russia's Polina Gagarina (2015), Australia's Dami Im (2016), Bulgaria's Kristian Kostov (2017), Cyprus' Eleni Foureira (2018) and Italy's Mahmood (2019).

Eurovision Review 2020: Ireland - Lesley Roy "Story Of My Life" | WIWI JURY

“As a songwriter you always strive to write something that is true to yourself but can also speak to a large scale audience," Lesley Roy told us. "Story Of My Life is not just my story, it’s everyone’s. I had struggled with a lot of anxiety after my music career took some different turns and it took me a long time to be able to write something honest for myself but also something that I wanted to perform again. This song is about overcoming your difficulties, standing up, speaking truth and owning your story."

Eurovision Review 2020: Israel - Eden Alene "Feker Libi" | WIWI JURY

Born in Israel to parents who fled persecution in Ethiopia, Eden Alene pays homage to her roots in "Feker Libi" (Amharic for "My darling"). The fact that it's sung in five languages conveys the universality of her message: love is the most important thing we have, regardless of where we live or what language we speak. The inclusion of an imaginary language in the lyrics only adds to this: love can be felt even in the absence of linguistic understanding. The song is devoted to her boyfriend Jonathan. 

 

 

Eurovision Review 2020: Australia - Montaigne "Don't Break Me" | WIWI JURY

With "Don't Break Me", Montaigne speaks to the trauma of untangling yourself from a dysfunctional, and potentially abusive, relationship. The song begins by describing how her feelings towards her partner have changed: “I don’t feel the same buzz, when your name comes up on my phone anymore”. Affection has given way to something more terrifying: “Feels like I don’t feel you, I fear you.”

The Weather Channel is not ready for this Hurricane! Sanja, Ivana, and Ksenija are stand-out vocalists on their own. Put them together and it’s time to issue a warning. This is loud. This is sexy.
